Wolverines top U13 elite field, win 2019 Minetgot Cup title

[March 16, 2019 - Harmon, Guam] The Guam Shipyard Wolverines finished with the best record of the Aloha Maid Minetgot Cup Elite Youth League to capture the 2018-2019 U13 Division championship title Saturday at the Guam Football Association National Training Center.

The Wolverines finished the 15-week season with 11 wins, one loss, and three draws, ahead of the season’s silver finishers, the Wings FC (10-4-1).

The Wolverines, undefeated through 14 weeks, suffered its lone loss of the season Saturday, falling to fourth-place finishers Community First/Days Inn Dededo Soccer Club 3-2. Zaven Piolo scored twice for Dededo and teammate Alesana Jorlang scored the team’s other goal. Anthony “A.J.” Chaco scored both goals for the Wolverines.

In other final week matches, the Wings FC defeated Quality Distributors 6-2, thanks to a hat trick by Raif Sablan, two goals from Gavin Baker, and one from Keoni Lawton. Calvin Babauta scored both goals for Quality.

The Bank of Guam Strykers edged third-place team ASC Trust Islanders 2-1 with two goals from Peyton Blair. Jada Han scored the Islanders’ lone goal in the contest. The full match is online: https://mycujoo.tv/video/guamfa?id=37668

A short awards ceremony was held Saturday afternoon, with the Champions gold cup trophy and gold medals presented to the Wolverines. Silver medals were presented to the Wings FC.

The Wolverines’ Riley Rama won his second-straight Golden Boot title, finishing the season with 26 goals, five more than the previous season haul. Dededo’s Zaven Piolo finished in second place in the goal-scoring race with 17 scored in 15 weeks.

The Wings’ Aaron Bejado claimed the 2018-2019 Golden Glove award as the league’s top goalkeeper. Bejado allowed just 17 goals for the season and finished with a league-best six clean sheets. Bejado edged last season’s winner, Jariah San Gil of the ASC Trust Islanders. San Gil allowed 18 goals for the season and finished with three clean sheets.
